St. Michael the Archangel

This sculpture combines the two most common ways of picturing St. Michael. As in images of the Last Judgment, he presides over the psychostasy (weighing of souls) while a demon tries to falsify the balance scales. And as in images of the fall of Satan, he attacks that demon with his spear.
On the right, a military saint with a halo holds his spear parallel to Michael's. On the left, a woman saint holds a torch. Some sites on the internet identify these two as St. Anastasia and St. Chrysogonus. They are probably right. Anastasia is Zadar's patron saint, and Chrysogonus is associated with her in legend and in art. The woman saint's torch is quite rare as an attribute for Anastasia, although sometimes she holds a fire either in her hand or in a bowl.
